About 10 kilometers from the heart of the city in the west there are mountains called “Suthep Mountain” named after the Indian hermit named” Wa Suthep,” who had lived on the top of the mountain, there is one of the major tourist attractions in Chiang Mai.

According to the legend, during the reign of King Ku Na (1335-1385), a Buddha relic was found and placed on elephant wagon to permit the elephant to go freely, and the elephant climbed onto Doi Suthep, stopped at present site of Suthep Temple. Thus, Buddha relic was worshipped where the elephant stopped.

The existing temple was established in the 16th Century and modified, expanded several times. The 306 steps from the parking lot to the temple were served as as side guard rail. Temple was consisted of well-decorated buidings and the pagoda. The main pagoda was inlet with engraved gold plated and four decorative umbrella cover. Many devotees at home and abroad all thought it had very uncanny efficacy. Those Buddhists who visit Chiang Mai would worship here.

SACRED

Wat Doi Suthep is probably Chiang mai's most sacred and the most popular landmark. This important temple was built on a hill top which is 3,280 feet above sea level. The architecture is Northern Thai style and contains the holy relic of Buddha.
